Trail Assessment Crew Member
The Planning Center | DC&E is looking for individuals to assist in trail mapping and assessment work. We are seeking individuals who are avid trail users, detail-oriented, energetic, and passionate about resource protection, public access to open space, and trail-related issues. The Planning Center | DC&E provides a wide range of open space and resource planning services, building upon our firm-wide expertise in landscape architecture, urban design, planning and environmental review. All trail work will be conducted within Los Angeles County, Supervisorial District 5.
Key qualifications for this position:
- Possess degree, or working towards degree, in landscape architecture, environmental studies, outdoor recreation, or similar professional program.
- Experience operating GPS units (preferably Trimble GPS units) in the field, and downloading data to computer
- Strong observation skills and excellent attention to detail
- Strong written skills
- Interest in trail and open space planning and design
- Basic understanding of grading and topography
- Ability to walk long distances carrying up to 20 pounds in high temperatures
- Must be able to provide own transportation to and from trailheads in Los Angeles County
- Must be willing to complete data entry as part of project; must have access to internet
- Access to personal computer for project use (MS Word and Excel) a plus
Trail Assessment Crew members must be available to work approximately 30 hours a week beginning August and continuing through October. The selected candidates will receive one week of training, after which they will be expected to conduct trail assessments and mapping activities with minimal supervision. Trail Crew members will work in teams of two to complete trail assessments and mapping. The work will be conducted primarily in the field, with limited recording and data transferring to be completed from home computers. The Planning Center | DC&E will provide GPS units and other necessary assessment equipment. Crew members will need to provide their own transportation and have the ability to use personal computers and the internet to complete tasks.
Trail Assessment Crew members will be temporary full-time employees of The Planning Center | DC&E. Compensation for the position is $16 per hour, plus mileage reimbursement.
