On June 6, 2002, the winners of the 2002 LA APA Planning Awards were honored at a ceremony held in the Tom Bradley Tower Room on the top floor of the newly restored Los Angeles City Hall.

The 360-degree panoramic views of Downtown Los Angeles and beyond that the Tower Room provided were great attraction for attendees, many of whom explored the wrap-around outdoor observation deck before and after the ceremony—taking in views of the many exciting projects under development downtown.

Eight projects were recognized for their excellence—with many of the winners expressing their pride and gratitude to the Los Angeles APA for the award. Particularly notable was the recognition given to the City of Redondo Beach for the “Heart of the City” specific plan—which had been turned down in a city council meeting the prior evening.

Also awarded was the Distinguished Leadership Award for an Elected Official, which went to Zev Yaroslavsky for his efforts as a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

A special thanks went to Los Angeles APA Board members Todd Tipton and Kevin Keller, for their work in organizing what was regarded by all as a splendid event.
